Japanese Buddhism also does the same to Buddha statue in the event of Buddha's birthday which is on Apr 4th.
When I was a kid, I was sent to the local temple for the Buddha's birthday event. And people were pouring tea over the head of Buddha statue.
So the statue of President Trump is being treated as equal to Buddha statue as the birthday event.
